The Wisconsin Forensics Coaches Association has released the 2008-2009 topics for Special Occasion, Public Address, Storytelling, and Moments in History. (Group Discussion is not an event - but yet topics are listed).

Spring Show: Arsenic and Old Lace

Come to Memorial Theater Company’s production of Arsenic and Old Lace. Mortimer Brewster, a drama critic learns on his wedding day that his beloved maiden aunts Abby Brewster & Martha Brewster are homicidal maniacs, and that insanity runs in his family

JMM Wins Fifth State Forensics Championship

James Madison Memorial High School earned their fifth Wisconsin Forensic Coaches’ Association State Championship on Saturday, April 19 at Ripon College. The Spartans—coached by Tom Hardin, Tim Scheffler, and Nick Bubb—had previously earned State Championships in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2006 (shared with Appleton East). Memorial joins West Bend West High School as a five-time champion (West Bend West took home the title in 1972, 1974, 1975, 1978, and 1985); only Appleton East has earned more State Championships, bringing home the honor seven times (1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2005, and 2006). The Spartans also claimed six individual championships en route to their victory.

Winning individuals State Championships were: Andrew Gonzalez (four minute), Andrew Muir and Josh Tennenbaum (Play Acting), Chelsea Burris (Poetry), Yi Ding (Public Address), Albert Li (Oratory), and Emma Cornwall (Storytelling).

JMM cleared 24 out of 25 entries into semi-final rounds and 20 entries into final rounds. Also earning state finalist honors were: Jordan Hinahara (four minute - 6th), Jiwon Jun (four minute - 4th), Kate Rifkin (farrago - 2nd), Samantha Harper (moments - 4th), Trisch Ulrich (moments - 2nd), Namratta Sehgal (Oratory - 2nd), Treecy Marquradt-Thomas (Oratory - 5th), Matt Scales (Prose - 4th), Conner Hutchins (Radio - 3rd), Spencer O’Rourke (Solo Humorous - 4th), Anna Sewell (Solo Serious - 2nd), Colin Woodbury (Solo Serious - 4th), Sisi Brown (Solo Serious - 5th), Juliette Walker (Special Occassion - 4th). Semifinalist honors were also given to Yi Yi (extemp), Chris Tate (poetry), Yvonne Loung (Solo Serious), Ben Mau (Solo Humorous).

For Juniors and Seniors interested in applying to a college that has a forensics team, the National Forensics League has developed a “Colleges and Universities of Excellence Program” that seeks to help successful high school forensics students be rewarded competitive offers of admissions to prestigious universities.

Upon announcing the program, the National Forensics League said, “Having such well-rounded and empirically successful students enables the NFL to connect its members with interested schools and even scholarship dollars.”

First Weekend a Success

Despite missing the Bradley Tournament in December, the forensics team achieved a great deal of success this weekend at the Appleton East tournament. The team earned a first place sweepstakes finish over Brookfield East 337 to 282.

Many students also earned individual championships. Students capturing a first place finish were: Matt Scales (Prose), Chris Tate (Poetry), Sisi Brown (Dramatic Interp), Albert Li (Oratory), Kate Rifkin (Farrago), Samantha Harper (Moments), Conner Hutchinson (Radio) and Catherine Turng (Special Occasion).

Many other students cleared to final rounds, including: Sema Razi (Demo), Matt Scales and Chris Tate (Duo), Amber Scarborough and Toast Reniemann (Duo), Clare Ryan (Extemp), Sandy Krueger (Oratory and Four Minute), Andrew Gonzales (Oratory and Four Minute), Kaity Taylor (Four Minute), Valerie Shin, Yang-lei Ye, and Lingran Kong (Group Interp), Brendan Caldwell (Lincoln Douglas Debate), Namratta Seghal (Oratory and Moments), Laurel Hammers (Oratory), Andrew Muir & Josh Tennebaum (Play Acting), Catlin Scales & Nick Bolen (Play Acting), Colin Woodbury (Dramatic Interp and Prose), Fangfei Duan (Prose), Daniel Letierman (Prose), Sam Zhu (Radio), Spencer O’Rourke (Humorous Interp), Ben Mau (Humorous Interp), Sarah Arbaje (Special Occasion), Sydney Peak (Special Occasion), Anna Svetnicka (Special Occasion) and Emma Cornwall (Storytelling).

Forensics Begins Tonight!

Students, Coaches, Parents, and Alumni are excited to embark on the first competition of the season tonight. Later tonight buses leave for Appleton East and the tournament will begin Saturday morning. For some fortunate students, they do not have to wait until Saturday for their first competition of the year. Students participating in Student Congress will begin their season tonight. Regardless of when the season starts, students have been busy preparing all week and they have done a great job improving.

We’ll report back with results as soon as we return from Appleton. Wish us luck!

CHANGE IN PLANS

Because of transportation needs of students/judges we will all be leaving at 9:30. Those who need to check into 2nd hour may do so and request to be excused. Those who do not so meet outside of 821 at the start of 2nd hour to load into the van.

~~The first group of competitors leaving for State will meet by room 821 at 8:15 (start of the day).~~

~~The later group will leave after 4th hour (12:45).~~
